Butler County


Butler City is the County Seat of Butler County, located 35 miles north of Pittsburgh.
There are 9 school districts in Butler County, and Butler County Community College.  It is also the home of Slippery Rock University, one of the largest employers in the county.


Butler County has been an industrial center since the early 1800’s.  Westinghouse Nuclear Headquarters and oil refinery Marcellus Shale are located in Butler County.

Communities around Butler


There are several known communities in the region such as Saxonburg, Sarver, Freeport, Natrona Heights, Brackenridge, Lower Burrell, New Kensington, Vandergrift,  Apollo and Leechburg  just to name a few.  Some of these communities are more rural than others, but, overall, they provide the same common theme: the opportunity to live in a close knit community outside the City of Pittsburgh.  These neighborhoods are filled with history and culture as well as plenty of outdoor activities due to the location of the Allegheny River and surrounding hills.  


Some of these towns date back to the early 1800s providing a rich historic atmosphere.  Several have their own individual museums and historical societies. Others host parades, festivals, or summer fair traditions that have continued to happen for decades.  They all have multiple parks and prominent Main Streets encouraging the “small town feel” with shops, restaurants, and banks.  Each has individual school districts with elementary, middle, and high schools. 


In addition, there are well known golf courses and country clubs, nearby popular Pittsburgh Mills Mall, several large companies and businesses, and even a race track, Lernerville Speedway.  With so much to do and so much to be proud of, the Allegheny Kiski Valley region is an area that thousands are happy to call home.
